Here is a novel that has stayed with me like almost no other book since I read it fifteen years ago. It is controversial. It provokes. At times it appalls. The Kindly Ones is the fictional memoir of a Nazi, Dr. Maximilien Aue, a cultured, family man who, in the years after the war, lives in France, owner of a lace factory there. His memories of the Nazi regime and the war are searing. But there is more here than horror. As Maximilien writes to his future readers on the very first page, “this concerns you: you’ll see that this concerns you." This is a story like no other that examines under what circumstances a person’s humanity breaks.
