Yes! With only a few pages left in this novel, will we even find out if this is body in this snow is someone of significance?

The Greek mythology feels strong in this latter part of the novel.

Clemens and the other guy, keep “popping up” in this story, trying to get Max to “pay” for what he did.

So weird!

I can never tell if Max is hallucinating or if he is talking about actual events, but then I think, that speaks of Littell’s skill, because after all, isn’t that the point?

If the writing is done well enough, the reader should feel like hallucinations could be reality.

Littell IS great in blending Max’s experiences of reality and dreams/fantasy. This novel is so shocking in content that it’s easy to overlook the tremendous writing!

I can’t agree with you more. I have had to stop and reflect on that many times. Littell’s abilities at description and character building.

He has built Max and Thomas so well, I feel like they are right there, when I am reading about them.

Perhaps Clemens and Weser are a varition of the Erinyes in the Oresteia?

that is what I keep writing in my journal, they must symbolize part of the Greek tragedy.

I am thankful that Lori explained some of that in this post, so that makes much more sense to me now.

Good observation about the investigators. I’m going to think further about this point…!
